“I was a child who wanted to be accepted just as I was not on the basis of skin color.”
When I am invited to speak at schools, part of my message is about opportunity.
There is so much opportunity in America ,because I had survived the orphanage the opportunities in Vietnam were limited. Even though I grew up in a white family, I still dealt with
racism and prejudice, so I tell the children that to play the race card is an excuse for not succeeding. There’s too much opportunity for any one to sit and blame others for why they
can not succeed in this great country of America. How is racism handled, when is not just local but global issue? It has to begin with me and you. We have to be responsible for our own
thoughts and actions. You may have grown up a intense racial or hostile environment, but you chose how you are going to live today.
From my perspective the first equal opportunity that all Americans have is education, which is free and available to all.
Most often it is not other people, but it is ourselves, that stand in the way of achieving our dreams. I truly believe in the statement that whatever man can perceive man can achieve.
One day in class we were told to dream big because we lived in America. The teacher said we were in the land of opportunity where dreams come true. Those words settled into my heart, and
I still believe that every day in America dreams come true.
We can change our whole life and the attitude of people around us simply by changing ourselves. -Rudolph Dreikurs
